Genre and Convention 

genre is a style of category for a film, it is useful for the industry as it is used to target audiences 

for example: 

Rebel without a cause (1955) shows themes and topics of- drinking under age, romance/young love, family domestics, arguing with authority 

Grease (1978)- musical, love story, school life-different groups-prom

love and basketball (2000)- love, basketball, stereotypes, sexuality, race/ethnicity, prom 

my brother the devil (2012)- sexuality, gang crime, deprived areas, family, loyalty 

- not all teen films appeal to all teens/young adults that is because they are divided in sub genres this is a few examples of sub genres…

*supernatural
*romance
*romcom
*independent real issues 
*horror
*sci-fi 
*thriller
